We have been using
Kelpies as the main players in our livestock handling operation for
over a decade now and have not found a breed that can compete with
the Kelpie for all round ability.
The special
attributes of the Working Kelpie are that they have the ability to
travel or escort their livestock in a fashion that does not upset
them. They have strength and a massive amount of “heart and
desire”. One of the things that we like best about the Working
Kelpie is their ability to work and think for themselves. This
means that you can place them on a large mob to mind the livestock
or you can set them going with a mob while you muster other areas
and they are happy to do this. In the breed itself there are many
different styles and over the years Evonne and I have been selecting for
the types that suit our work, conditions and temperament.
For people thinking
of purchasing a working dog my advice would be for you to look at
the vendors dogs on their own livestock.
-
Cattle- With the use of a dog, come to
you in a calm manner (walking) with no kicking or charging of the
dog.
-
Sheep- With the use of a dog, come to
you in a calm manner with no circling of the mob. Good stock flow
in yards, no biting on meat producing areas of the sheep while
forcing.
All I say is that
if you like the way the livestock are being worked and that is how
you want your livestock to behave whilst being mustered then that is
the dog for you.
Our Kelpies produce several litters of pups per year and from time to time we have going dogs at
varying stages of training also for sale. See our sale section for
details. |
